If you could write a letter to your sixteen-year-old self, what would you say?
Earlier this month, I celebrated a birthday, and since my special occasion is always near the end of one calendar year, and the beginning of another, it tends to be a time of reflection for me. A blend of past, present, and future, if you will.
I thought about this question for myself, considering what I would tell the young girl so full of hope and expectation for the life ahead of her, as she set her sights on a limitless future filled with untapped potential.
There are so many things I could say.
But, ultimately, I think I would want her to know that God plays the long game. He’s the Master of setting the stage and laying a foundation. He opens doors, connects lives, allows paths to cross, and uses the past, present and future to work in and through His people to bring about a long-term plan.
Whether we are sixteen or forty-six, it’s hard to know what lies around the next bend in the road. But along the way, may we keep Proverbs 17:3 close at heart.
The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD tries the hearts.
He is making us, and He is shaping us. It won’t always feel good, but it will always be for a greater purpose.
